Keeping Rous Lench Safe: Spring 2026 Crime Prevention Bulletin
Rous Lench Parish Council has produced a spring crime prevention bulletin in partnership with West Mercia Police, with practical advice to help residents stay safe and look out for one another.
Neighbourhood Watch
Neighbourhood Watch is one of the most effective community-led crime prevention initiatives in the UK. At its heart it is about neighbours staying connected, sharing information, and being aware of what is happening around them.
In rural communities like ours, unfamiliar activity often stands out - and when neighbours communicate, concerns can be spotted early and shared appropriately. This helps deter opportunistic crime and strengthens community confidence.

Stay Alert - Awareness, Not Alarm
Staying alert does not mean being suspicious - it means being aware. A car that does not quite fit, unusual activity at odd times, or repeated patterns can all be useful pieces of information. We spoke to West Mercia Community Police Officer PC Vicky Elliott for her advice:
"If you see anything suspicious, or see a car out of place but only get a partial number plate, please do not hesitate to call it in. It might be the missing piece of a jigsaw we need to make an arrest."
Reporting Incidents
Reporting incidents helps build an accurate picture of crime in rural areas, ensuring police resources are allocated where they are most needed. Even if an incident seems minor, logging it can help identify wider patterns.
- 999 - if a crime is in progress or there is immediate danger
- 101 - to report non-emergency crime or suspicious activity

SmartWater - A Strong Deterrent
Rous Lench is proud to be a SmartWater village. SmartWater is an invisible forensic property marking system used widely across the UK. Each kit contains a unique code registered to your address, allowing police to trace recovered property back to its owner.
Communities that use SmartWater widely often see reduced theft, as the signage alone acts as a strong deterrent. Where theft does occur, SmartWater can help provide valuable evidence.
To obtain SmartWater for your property, please contact Rous Lench Parish Council for more information.
Vehicle Security
Vehicle crime, including keyless car theft, continues to affect rural areas. A few simple precautions can significantly reduce risk:
- Always lock your vehicle, even for short stops
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Use Faraday pouches or a home-made Faraday box for car keys to block cloning and relay theft
- Store keys away from doors and windows
Sharing these tips with neighbours helps protect the whole community.
Home Security
Simple home security measures remain one of the most effective ways to deter crime:
- Lock doors and windows, even when at home
- Secure sheds, garages, and outbuildings
- Use external lighting where possible
- Consider timers or smart lighting to make homes appear occupied
Making your home more secure not only protects your own property - it helps reduce crime across the village.
Working Together as a Village
Community safety works best when residents, parish councils, and police work together. By staying informed, sharing concerns, and supporting one another, we help keep Rous Lench a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
